Friends of Hopewell Furnace Funding Programs
The following is a description of the main programs where the FOHF provides financial assistance to the NPS at Hopewell Furnace NHS. Each of these programs entails raising funds to provide financial support to the Park. The descriptions identify some of the features in support provided to date but other features may be added as needs are identified and resources allow. The FOHF will establish and maintain Designated Funds for each of these programs from which the financial support will be provided. The FOHF will engage in fund raising activities for each as a means for providing that support.
Animal Care
The FOHF provides financial support to the Park in establishing and maintaining a program of animals to depict how livestock were used by residents of the village. This support may include the purchase of animals, feed, medicine and other animal care supplies as needed and as resources permit. The FOHF may also provide support for specialized care such as vetrinarian and wool shearing, and for the housing of animals and maintenance of pastures and other needs to maintain animal safety and well being.
Apple Orchard
The FOHF may provide financial support for external costs for care and maintenance of the apple orchard at the Park. Support may include planting, pruning, spraying and fertilization of the trees as the Park identifies such needs and as FOHF resources are available.
Education
The FOHF will support the Park in providing educational opportunities on the history of ironmaking, on the history of living at the village, and the ways in which the furnace and village played a role in the history of the U.S. Such support may include the publishing of books on ironmaking, the preparation of materials presenting historical events and relationships and providing funds for awards for school students in the annual essay contest.
Hospitality
The FOHF will support hospitality activities to encourage the public use of the Park and the work of volunteers at the Park. The FOHF may sponsor or support certain activities such as after hours yoga sessions, art in the park opportunities, star gazing, providing food and drink for volunteers and attendance of off-site events to publicize the Park.
