Apple Varieties in Hopewell Furnace Orchard
Over 140 trees comprising 32 apple varieties are present in the orchard, providing apples that are suitable for cider making (17 varieties), cooking (27 varieties) or fresh eating (22 varieties).  Two of the varieties are from local discoveries, one in Lancaster County (Smokehouse)  and one from Newlin Township in Chester County (Jefferis).  Many are considered heirloom apples from development throughout the northeastern United States, such as the Baldwin from Massachussetts, the Rhode Island Greening (state fruit of that state) and internationally like the Gravenstein from Denmark and the McIntosh from Canada.  As such, the orchard provides a ‘time capsule; of apple genetics and a good example of what might have been grown here during the furnace operations.
The Orchard Table lists the varities of apples, the number of trees, the ripening time, some alternate names of the variety and the origin of the varieties for those identified in the Hopewell orchard and location on the Orchard Map.
